Overview
CNBC PRO is CNBC’s premium digital experience. PRO users have access to premium content such as live, ad-free TV streams from around the world. As a Product Management and User Experience Intern on the video team, I designed user interfaces and built a user flow of the premium video player, “PRO Player”.
Tools
Sketch, Overflow
Skills
UI/UX Design, Interaction Design, User Flow
Problem
Early on in my internship, I sat in on a meeting during which a UX Designer presented her PRO Player designs to the Head of UX Research and the video team Product Manager (my boss). Although they loved the interfaces that she designed, they had trouble visualizing the user flow. That’s where I came in.
Need
User flows describe the various paths that users can take to perform actions within an application. The designs in addition to the flow-chart-like structure make the solution easy to visualize and understand to anyone, whether they are a designer, developer, customer or stakeholder. From a design standpoint, user flows are valuable because they force you to be thorough and can ultimately save you time during the development process.
Objectives
To document the end-to-end process of user interaction with the PRO Player
To visualize the complete path of the user’s journey
To create new designs for any states that were not accounted for
To provide clear, detailed designs for engineers to follow for easier implementation
Solution
Using the set of existing designs, I mapped out the user’s paths from beginning to end with Overflow. As I followed the flow myself and went through all of the states, I noticed that some of them were missing. In order to fill in these gaps and complete the flow, I used Sketch to ideate some new designs.
Outcomes
A presentation of the flow to the UX team, during which I received feedback that I later incorporated into following iterations
Challenges
Working with another designer’s designs
Teaching myself new software programs (Sketch, Overflow)
